Your Money Or Your Life
Everyone is obsessed with this book. Apparently it’s one of the most influential EVER WRITTEN on personal finance? Oprah said “it can change your life.” So- because Oprah said that- I decided to give it a read…. even though it’s about the FIRE movement (financial independence, retire early)... and I hate the FIRE movement...
Don’t get me wrong- I think financial independence and retiring early sounds GREAT! But extreme frugality does not. I would rather work for longer & live a lifestyle that’s comfortable for me (I need nice linens and back massages) than sleep in a van and eat oatmeal to cut expenses so I can leave the workforce.
But, despite all that, I absolutely adore this book. My copy is highlighted and underlined and I have notes on my phone of parts I wanna remember. It taught me SO MUCH about my relationship with money and spending. And also made me consider what ENOUGH is. Most financial advice is based on the idea that more-is-better. This book is based on the idea that enough is enough. And to figure out what your enough is.
So yeah- I got rid of ⅓ of the stuff in my apartment and haven’t bought anything new since I read this book? Am I FIRE now? Ew, no. But I do feel less connected to things that I was and like in many ways it healed my relationship with money? IDK, I think this is a very special book- fam. Like lowkey, I loved it. I would recommend it 10/10.
